If the lonely one is not real then what is it a metaphor for?
I thing that the lonely one is just some thing that someone made up so they could blame their problems on. For example when people die in the book its always the lonely one who killed them or took their life. It also makes it possible for them not to face the reality of a situation.
How has the lonely one affected the characters?
I think that the lonely one has affected the characters by making them believe in a boogieman in a sense. The people believe if they start to get cold at night that the lonely one is out trying to get someone. And it just scares them to the point of not going out of their houses and locking them up as tite as they can.

I think you are right. They use the lonely one to explain death. We, as humans, like to understand why things happen, not just accept that they do. The lonely one gives the characters a way to accept death.

Everyoday will always find things too blame on or too run from it's the way life is.
Real or not people will probably believe for the wrong reasons.
