Fahrenheit 451 Final

“For every time there is a season.” Having Montag to quote The Book of Ecclesiastes at the end of the book gives the readers a closure of hope. I’m sure you’ve heard that saying that people say, “Things may be bad now, but they can get better.” There is always a lesson behind some of the hard things in life. We learn who to love, who to trust, and who to befriend. “All of life is a journey which paths we take, what we look back on, and what we look forward to is up to us. We determine our destination, what kind of road we will take to get there, and how happy we are when we get there.” –Unknown.

When there was no way of changing his mind on house life was, a crazy 17 year old girl got his mind flowing. He never question what was going right or bad in his mind. He realized he wasn’t truly happy. The kerosene numbed him from emotion and filled the emptiness with false emotion. He finally had his own mind back, he was finally thinking for himself.

Montag questioned his happiness. He tried to find ways to show he was. Then he broke he figured that what he was doing wasn’t something to be happy over. His wife loved her “family” more than she would ever realize he loved her. By the end of the book he can smile knowing what he has now is real and true. He has what he needs. He has the smile that warms him more than the numbness of burning books ever did.

Faber finally found a friend that he could trust within. He sat in his house for over 40 years hiding. When Montag came along and gave him hope he decided he was not going to sit around any longer. He wanted to make a change too. He helped Montag. He befriended an enemy and was able to come over the fear of trusting others.

For me when I was in Detention almost over a year ago, I thought I wasn’t going to make it. Coming off of heroine and cocaine was being drag out of hell. Yes, it was horrible then, but now when people look at me they would have never guessed that I went through that. I have been clean from it for 10 months. I’m in school, doing amazing. I’m finally happy and don’t have a fake substance smile on anymore.

Through out my treatment I’ve met some obstacles, as well as Montag did. I don’t have my family; I was numb for so long with my drugs; and don’t know what to do. Thinking about things like this helped me realize how lucky I am to be where I am. I may not live with my family at the moment, but I am getting better, and getting help. I don’t see any of my old friends, but I’ve made new sober friends. I may be sad at times, but when I’m happy I know why I’m smiling is because what I did. I have feeling to what life is about. I always remember that I do have a voice, and I can say no.

Fahrenheit 451 Final

Montag chooses to quote the book of Ecclesiastes when he reaches the city. Why is this significant? What is the tone at the end of Fahrenheit 451?

My opinion of this is that he may think that things are always going bad but there are good things happening to. There are good and there are bad to every thing that happens. I feel that every thing happens for a reason and that some times we can not help what happens to others in there life and we can not help what happens to our selves in our own life. “For every time there is a season” I feel that this quote means that when they want something they do not realize they already have things that they do not need.

I feel that in this book a good example of that is at the beginning Mildred is talking about a wall television. My thoughts on that is they already have 3 wall televisions why do they need 4 they do not even watch television a lot any ways. Through out the book they never even watch television.

I think that people become complacent because they feel that they can not help change anything or feel like they can’t do anything about it. Montag criticizes people who become complacent because I think he knows that something should be done and he thinks that the people who are complacent are cowards and don’t want to help make things better.

One person who was not complacent was the girl who died because she had books and they were going to burn them and she lit herself on fire. I think that woman should not be criticized because she was trying to prove a point.

Faber, who was Montag’s accomplice, was also not complacent because they were trying to bring down the firemen because they knew that what the firemen do is wrong. Montag was complacent in the beginning of the book because he didn’t know at that point that books were completely harmless. He realized that and criticized the complacent people because they need to stand up for what is right and Montag realizes this.

What if people were more complacent? What would be of the world now if the people back in the old days were complacent? I think that you should not be complacent because you can help change bad things and make it better. Martin Luther King is a very good example for non complacency because he had such a big impact on everyone and he changed a lot of things for the better of the world.

Another good life example for complacency is the beatles. They stood up for what was right and was not going to let the evil people think for them and tell them how to live their lives. I think that the beatles made a big change in the world. They helped people recognize that you don’t have to be complacent and have other people live your life.

Fahrenheit 451 Final

Answer/Opinion: I feel that the people that are to blame for the loss of freedom of speech are the people themselves, here let me elaborate on the subject. The people caused this because government passed the law of no freedom of speech, thus the people caused it because they chose the people assigned to control our rights by voting for the elected officials in the government. This shows that the responsibility of freedom of speech is in our hands because we always have a choice.

Evidence 1: An example of this is when Montag and so many others chose to hide books and their consequence was to have there house burned down by the firemen. For Montag it was himself that had to burn his house down.

Life example 1: I feel that I’ve made choices in my life that caused me a loss of my rights such as when I had a choice on weather to break the law or not and I chose to break the law. This lost me my rights because I then ended up in DT and from there into a program thus loosing my freedom to be in the community.

Life example 2: Another experience I had was when my mom decided to take a pain pill that made her sleepy and drive and thus lost her right to drive.

Censorship

I think censorship is the act of the government withholding information for the common people. J.K. censoring is the act of keeping info away usually for a good reason. Such as keeping swear words out of movies.

It is o.k. to censor when there are young kids who will be watching. I think censoring nudity, swear words, and violence is okay. I think that the people who should be censoring is the parents of the kids. Also there should be a committee to see movies and read books to deem them appropriate. But the parents should have last say.

I think usually after the age of fourteen you are mature enough to decide if you want to see uncensored. I think parents still have the over all say though. Some stuff like detailed sex scenes should still be censored.

Censorship

To me censorship is something that someone does when something in the media isn’t appropriate for a certain group of people. For example if there is a lot of violence or sexuality in a movie someone may censor it so that it is PG-13 or R rated. I think that people do this in order to protect little kids for being too exposed to the world. But to me everyone is different; they have different maturity levels at certain stages of their lives. Why do we censor if we are just going to see it later on in life.

I think that there should be a point, a line drawn about what should and should not be on television. Some people tell me that is what censoring is for. I am talking about just not showing it at all. Some people don’t have good judgments so we shouldn’t show it. When certain things are rated PG-13 I think that it’s not a really good way to say when things should be censored because everyone is at different maturity levels. What may be PG-13and is appropriate for me could not be appropriate for some of my friends.

I think that you should censor naked people including babies because you have no idea who is going to watch the movie and if they are a child molester or something like that. I also think that you should censor violence. If you are going to rate something and put an age rang on it you should at least put what apparent thinks is an appropriate age for it or put it as maturity level. People are seeing things that are hurting people. The movie director is the one that chooses what it is rated but the parents are the ones who should decide in my opinion.

I think though that you should not censor things on the news because we need to be informed with no sugar coating because that will only hurt people more in the end. People will stop trusting the news and then not listen to what it says. Like if you should evacuate the state because terrorist are going to blowup the state or something like that. We need to feel like we can trust at least on thing right?

Censorship

It is ok to use censorship in schools to keep students from reading things they aren’t ready to read about. Reading books that talk about sex and drugs at the age of 12 is not ok. Because you aren’t ready to be expose to such things. That’s where censorship kicks in and helps out. The parents have the ok to approve the books read in school, which is completely natural, because they pay for everything the schools has.

We all grow up in different environments. Therefore we have different perspectives on different things. For example I’ve read books with some intense violence, but I don’t go around hurting the ones around me.

Censorship is a great thing, don’t get me wrong! But I think that there should be a limit to where it should stop or a grade where the use of censorship is banished. It’s understandable that student aren’t always mature enough to read a book that involves drugs, violence, and sex, but there are those who do take things serious and actually want to learn from the book. So why not make a class with students whose parents have agreed to let them read the book. The parent can decide weather the student can or cannot read the book, if we had they’re ok then student could read any type of genre.

Censorship

Censorship is suppression of speech or other communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the general body of people as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body. If something is to explicit to be read for some students it’s taken off the selves.


Parents have the right to tell the teachers if they do not want their kids to read a certain book. It is okay to use censorship in elementary schools. Their understanding of things such as drugs, sex, rape, language etc. they wouldn’t understand or could make them uncomfortable. They ages where it is okay to use censorship is 5 and under and all the way up to about 13. Parents have a lot to say if its okay, same with the teachers, and administration.

It’s not okay to use it in high schools. Students around the ages of 14-18 have the ability to understand what’s going on. Some students can even relate to the books. In my experience with read, I assumed that no book would get my attention and want me to read. After reading the books Breathing Under Water by: Alex Finn and the Ellen Hopkins books Crank, Glass, Tricks, Impulse, Identical, and Fallout, I haven’t been able to get enough of reading. I love it. It’s truly helped me with my recovery.

Censorship part 2

What is censorship? What it means to me is to hide, cover, or block anything deemed bad or inappropriate on media, television, radio, books, or anything else. Censorship can be good or bad, depending on who censors it, and what is being censored.

When is it okay to censor? I would think it is okay to censor sex and the human body when it’s being used or displayed, only if it is used for bad reasons. It is okay when it is art and not used.
I think kids or children who haven’t fully matured yet should not be exposed to inappropriate or provocative material. When your body and mind are more matured and you are more understanding of the natural art of the human body.

Who decides? I think most of the time it depends. Parents can decide to censor the television and video games and stuff but I really think that if the media and t.v. producers censored, children wouldn’t be exposed as much to whatever shouldn’t be seen or to them yet.

When should it never be censored? Well it depends on what it is but I would thing if material is used for knowledge and education, or for reasons that are not bad or inappropriate.

Censorship

To me censorship is when something is bad for certain ages or audiences to see. Like examples are a nude lady and a nude man. I would soy that it is inappropriate for teenagers and for young children and that is because the older you are the more mature you are. So I would say that torture movies are not necessarily appropriate for teenagers but I would say that some more mature teens could see that type of movie.

I would say that it is ok to censor things like naked people and sex scenes and I would say that because it is just not right to show something that personal to the whole world. I would say that naked scenes are inappropriate for teens and young children. Torture scenes I would say that young children should not see these types of movies. I would say that the state and your parents should decide if you see certain types of movies.

I would think that things such as words should not be edited because that is just how they express their feelings. It’s like when I am angry I swear because it gets my anger out so I am not holding it in. so I think that language is the only thing that shouldn’t be censored because we will here those things any way in life. Its just what life is to me anyway.

Censorship

Should schools censor books? Well I guess it kind of depends on how explicit the book is and who is reading it but for the most part I think if a book is being read by a high school student, it shouldn’t matter if its censored or not but if the book is being read by like an elementary school student, then I think it should be censored or just not read at all. I think most high school students have a lot of explicit language in their vocabulary so if they read explicit books, they won’t be taken aback by the profanities because they are familiar with them and comfortable with them. I think if parents were to have a say in whether books are censored, than all the books would be censored. I think it is a religious thing because mormons don’t like swearing or bad language and most of Utah is the LDS religion. I think the books should not be censored but should not be read by teachers in elementary school and maybe middle/junior high school, depending on how bad the book is. Another good reason not to censor books, is because the authors made the books that way for a reason, could be to express a character’s characteristics, or to get across to the reader more excitedly. Some books are really bad and maybe not appropriate for even high school students and I think those should not be censored, but the teachers should not read them. Books are unique and if they are explicit, it makes them unique, that’s why the author wrote it that way. So for another example, an adult reads a censored book and is more confused with it, but if they read it without the censoring, the adult would be more understanding and the perspective of the book would surely change.

School Censorship

What do I think about censorship in schools? I think that parents should be able to say what their kids are able to read. If some parents say no to the book and some say yes to the book I would say that the parents that said no to the book could ask if their kids could do something else to get that credit and the parents that said yes should let their kids be able to read those books with the teacher. So another thing that I would disagree on is that children books being banned because of fairy tale type things. Its like Harry Potter and how it got banned. It got banned from some schools because of witchcraft and I think that is really dumb. And also it would also depend on what the book has in it that it should only be read by certain ages only. Like books with sexual orientated stuff in it I would say that it should only be read by eighth to twelfth graders.

I say that books should have a rating before they come out about how appropriate they are so that there is already a rating so that parents don’t have to worry about what their kids are reading. And with this rating I think that the rating should be emplaced by the grade that they are in so that those certain grade kids can only read the rating below or on the same rating that the book was rated.

So I would say the parents should have some say into the books that their children are reading but I also think that they should also go with the fact that the teacher is not probably trying to hurt their kid.and that is what I think about school censorship.

Censorship in Schools

I believe that the school censorship is all a big misunderstanding, because people should be able to read what they want to read anytime they want. If someone can’t read what someone actually wrote in his own words, then you don’t get the real concept of what the author is actually trying to say. If you can’t get the concept about the book then what is the point of reading?

I think that censorship in my opinion is kind of lame. In a school, some people prefer not reading a book with swearing or something like that and that is understandable. But there are different books that you can read. Some people like the fact that the author can get his actual story out without editing the story. Me personally, I like the fact that the author can get his whole story out without editing it.

I really don’t like to read that much, but when I choose my own book it’s a good one. Like for instance I read a book a while ago called “Paint by Magic”. I really liked it a lot considering I don’t like to read very often and that the author could say what he wanted.

Censorship - Good or Bad?

Censoring can be good or bad. It all depends on who, their age, and what the book is about. I mean would you let a five year old read a book about a psycho murderer? Or would you care if a mature sixteen or seventeen year old read the same book? It all depends on the situation.

For censorship
I am all for censor ship in the ages fourteen and below. Some kids just aren’t ready or mature enough until (or after) they are fourteen. I think that swear words and sex references should be censored. I think that it is perfectly fine to censor up to a certain age.
Kids just aren’t ready for uncensored life.

Against censorship
Now on the flipside I believe mature (fourteen plus) should be uncensored. I believe mature young adults are ready to make their own choices. If you want to read uncensored books you have the right to. At fourteen I think you are mature enough to read uncensored books. No government has the right to censor without reason.

People and Books

I feel that all schools should let there student’s parents have a say in what books they want there kids or children to read. I think this is stupid they should let kids what they want. An example of a school district that does this is Logan school district. I went to Logan high and I saw a lot of sensor ship one of my teachers Mr. Cluff got in to trouble be because he was reading the book speak, so we could learn stuff about how teens act now days. I feel that was a very good lesson especially for that class and that school. I feel teachers should kind of teach what they want I feel that every one should get a say in it cause personally some students may have already read that book and they did or and do not like it that is just how I feel. Or the teacher can send home a note for the parents and students to sign saying that they do or do not want to read it. That is a good idea I personally would do that. I hope this will help some people learn that every one should hear every ones opinion.

Is Censoring Books Right or Wrong?

I am not really sure if schools should be allowed to censer books or not. My reasoning for this is because I feel that kids should be able to feel comfortable in schools because everyone deserves the right to feel safe. I also think that parents should have the right to choose what their kids read because after all they are one of the primary influences in child’s life. Though every parent has a different opinion on what is appropriate for their kids and what is not. My foster parents allow me to read The Hunger Games and Enders Game. However my friend’s parents think that those books are not okay and he is the same age as me. Everyone has a different take on books.

At the same time I don’t think it is okay because since people have such different opinions that if you take away one book you are punishing other people who would be allowed to read it. I wouldn’t want my favorite books to be taken away from my school just because my friend’s parents don’t approve that book for my friend. Some books are swearing or saying racial slurs but the author put it in there for a reason and that is to prove a point. I think that teacher’s have a pretty good judgment of what will and will not affect the kid’s in the classroom because they are around them more then the parent is most of the time. I believe teachers should get to choose what they have the class read or not read.

I think that schools and parents should have a little bit of say but you should not ban a book just because you don’t like it or you don’t think it is appropriate because that just punishes kids in a way. When you sign up for a library card if you don’t want your child reading or watching certain books then you can put it on there and when the child goes to check it out it won’t let them. We should do that in schools so that there isn’t that issue and we won’t have to ban books at all.

I believe that kids should have a say in what books they read. Give them the option to choose. Yes some books need censoring, but that is depending on age. I don’t think parents should have a say let kids read their books mostly cause if they don’t like the book they will stop reading it. If you tell your kids not to read certain books it will confuse them because adults always tell us to read that reading is good. It’s contradicting if we tell them certain books are bad. Instead of censoring books just because they have one or two bad words in it censor the books that actually really need censoring because the books that everyone keeps censoring have good lessons in them. I believe that if the adult is choosing the book then why does it have to be approved? If it’s already got an adults approval what more does it need? Because of Win-Dixie is the first book I read in school around the same time I was being told to read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer stone in fourth grade. I’m now in eleventh and that book is banned because it has fantasy? That tells me that kids can’t have an imagination if were banning books because there not true.
If we keep banning books what books will teachers have left to teach, or what books will kids have to read? Stop banning books because honestly if we wanted to read the books that were banned we would just go to the public library or we’d buy it. The only thing banning books does is teach kids that books are bad. I assure you kids have a good sense of what is right and what is wrong. I think if kids had a say in what they read they would be more interested in reading.

Censorship in Schools

Today a lot of schools use Censorship. When I use to go to school in Park City we read a book in which talked about sex, but the teachers blacked out words and phrases making the book kind of boring because in some parts you didn’t understand what had happened why were people all the sudden mad? Why did they brake up? Personally I believe that teachers should be able to teach whatever book they want to teach, if it relates to our topic or if it’s a good lesson that will teach us some important characters we need in life. Books can teach us a lot of things, and seen things happen to others decreases the chances of teens doing such things because they don t like the consequences that they read happened to the character in the book.

Another reason it’s because in high school students should be mature enough to get through the book without making comments or jokes. I feel that the censorship has to do a lot with that. Those students don’t take books serious sometimes. I remember this one kid in class kept laughing at things that were not funny. Like when a Character in the book would hit or call the other character mean names he would laugh, so he got kicked out out of class. I remember talking to him about it and he said that he didn’t laugh he chuckled still laughing about the situation. But he should have known better to have more respect not just for the teacher but for all the other students that are actually trying to understand the meaning of the book.

Teachers are smart enough to not read a book that talks about sex and drugs to a 3rd class. Parents should know that books like Breathing Under Water or Heroine the Road to Hell aren’t about drugs, sex or violence, because these thing happen in the real world they’re about the reasons behind them, the lesson that it has taught you about the consequences.

My Opinion

I honestly do think that parent should have a say on what they’re kids learn about. On the other hand, I don’t think that the whole committee group approving books is necessary. Teachers when to school, for a long time for reason. Parents should just trust them because they know what they’re teaching and if they pick those books it’s for a reason. We’re not in elementary school anymore we’re in high school. I’m sure that we’re all mature enough to take in what ever those books say.

I honestly think that parent’s are over rated now days and that whole other things are a waist of time, for example we are exposed to many other thing’s that are a whole lot worse then a couple swear word. I think that they should put there little committees to the streets and find ways to pull youngsters out of drugs and move them from harms way. They need to stop making a big deal about little things like this. That’s exactly the reason why teens don’t tell they’re parents anything, we know that they’ll just blow it out of proportion. They need to take a minute and think about that.

If you ask me all those pointless committees they need to get off teachers backs and let them do there jobs. They’re the teachers witch means that they probably made a few better choices then them. I’m not saying that they should not care about there kids but they should give them some space to learn about things that they’re really interested in. Besides isn’t that why parents want us to come to school.? If its not then’ I guess I haven’t learned much. Take it from an honors student, I trust my teachers so why shouldn’t the parent’s.?

Censorship in schools? Do you agree? This is nonsense! Truly do you think if they have the censors for books in school that they should KEEP it in ELEMENTRY! High school students’ mouths are worse then the books so why some books should be banned. Some typed literature they have out these day us older students (ages 15-18) can relate to them. Parents in some instances should have a say in what there students read to an extent, but not when there kids hide what they’ve been through. Come on, let’s be honest. Do we teenagers tell our parents EXACTLY EVERYTHING we’re going through?! I truly don’t ever want my mom EXPECIALLY knowing what I’ve done. It’s nice to have books out there to read that are kind of our lives typed out and help us cope with different situations. It’s not like we’re reading Shore Thing by Nicole Polizzi. Now I can see where parents would be concerned with teachers allowing that. Teachers that want to get this society students interested in reading is allowing them to get books that have common problems in them and the ends turning out to be better. For example: Teen Dating Violence is common. The book Breathing Underwater by Alex Finn was a great instance with both sides not being innocent. At first I was totally against reading it, but as my teacher kept encouraging me to finish it, I became relived. Ages have a big part in this, the maturity level in a teen need to be high to understand that maybe the books we read are actually things other teens have dealt with or still have too. I never used to like reading in school. Now that we read things that grab my attention I can’t get enough of it. Books to relate to for example are: Crank, Glass, Burned, and Impulse by: Ellen Hopkins; Cherry by Mary Karr; Go Ask Alice by Anonymous.
